Authorities search for Lincoln Park bank robber

An unidentified man robbed a Lincoln Park bank late this morning, Chicago police said.

The robbery took place at a North Community Bank branch, 2335 N. Clark St., about 11:40 a.m., said Officer John Mirabelli, a police spokesman. No one was hurt.

The man entered the bank, handed a teller a note indicating a demand for money and implied he was armed with a weapon, Mirabelli said. The teller handed over an unspecified amount of money to the man, who then fled from the bank.

Police could only provide a vague description of the man, who had a goatee and was wearing dark sunglasses. No one was in custody as of early this evening.

Cool crowd gathers for lakefront fireworks

The sign on the lifeguard's trailer at Oak Street Beach boasted it was a pleasant 78 degrees, but for some summer-starved Chicago beachgoers, there was still too much of a chill in the air.

"It's too mild for my taste," said Anna Morrison, 16, of Wheaton, who came to the beach today with her parents. "I mean, I like the sweatshirts but summer should be summer."

Nearby, a group of teens took turns running cannonballs off a dock into Lake Michigan. By the sound of their shrieks and howls, the water - which the lifeguard stand said was 67 degrees - may have well been ice.

Man charged in sex assault on 2 children

A Chicago man was ordered held today on $500,000 bond after he was charged with engaging in a sexual act with a 6-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl with developmental disabilities.

Demetrious F. Hughes, 43, of the 8000 block of South Indiana Avenue, was charged with criminal sexual assault and unlawful restraint.

In April, the children were playing at their father's house when Hughes, the father's friend, had sex with the girl, prosecutors said in a hearing in Cook County Holiday Bond Court before Judge Laura Sullivan. When the 6-year-old boy entered the room, Hughes allegedly pulled down the boy's pants and placed him on top of the girl.
